Our take

Pramoedya Ananta Toer (1925-2006) was born on the island of Java in 1925 and was a prominent Indonesian short-story writer and novelist. He was imprisoned first by the Dutch for participating in Indonesia’s revolt against Dutch rule, and then held by the Indonesian government on the prison island of Buru for 10 years. Toer wrote most of his works in confinement. "This Earth of Mankind" is the first of the four novels comprising the Buru Quartet. Set at the turn of the century, it follows a native Javanese boy named Minke as he grows up and confronts the injustices and hypocrisies of colonial rule. Although his novels have been banned in Indonesia, Toer received multiple awards for his writing, including the PEN Freedom to Write Award and the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
